Lab-Raised Bunny Pair Feel Sunlight on Their Fur for the First Time

Donna and Figaro, who spent their lives confined to a laboratory for testing and breeding, have finally been given a chance to experience life beyond their cages. Thanks to the efforts of Save the Buns and Woodstock Farm Sanctuary, these inseparable companions are now free to explore and simply enjoy being bunnies for the first time in their lives.

Riki Higgins from Woodstock Farm Sanctuary revealed that Donna and Figaro arrived frightened and bewildered, having never been treated as individuals. The concept of stepping outdoors or feeling grass beneath their paws was entirely foreign to them.

“They were timid and had not been treated as individuals up until that point,” Higgins shared, highlighting the emotional impact of their previous confinement and the sanctuary’s efforts to provide them with a sense of freedom and individuality.

When the inseparable duo first arrived at their new home, they were understandably frightened and disoriented. However, as they began to settle in, their confidence grew. Soon, it was time for them to take their first steps into the outside world—a completely new experience for both, as they had never been outdoors before.

When caregivers opened the hutch door to their new backyard, Figaro, the bolder of the two, was the first to venture out, taking in his first whiff of fresh air. After exploring briefly, he returned to encourage Donna, who was a bit more hesitant. With Figaro’s gentle reassurance, Donna eventually took her first steps outside. Together, they experienced the joy of hopping on grass and embracing their newfound freedom.

“They were curious, eager to explore, and encouraged each other,” shared Riki Higgins, reflecting on the pair’s heartwarming journey.

Curiosity and mutual encouragement now define Donna and Figaro’s days, transforming their world into one of joy and exploration. They’ve grown to love outdoor adventures and sharing cozy moments atop their houses.

“They’re doing great,” said Riki Higgins. “Donna is very outgoing, while Fig is more reserved. They enjoy going outside to jump around and then snuggling together on top of their houses inside.”

After a long and challenging journey, Donna and Figaro are now thriving, enjoying every moment of their newfound freedom. They have all they need and more, thanks to the care and compassion of their rescuers. If you’d like to help continue their joyful new life, donations to Woodstock Farm Sanctuary are always welcome.
